Recently I've noticed that in parking garages and driving against a wall mostly, there has been a clicking sound from what seems like the driver side (front or rear, I can't really tell). It's not a constant thing as it seems like it makes a sound with every revolution of the wheel. It sounds almost exactly like clicking a pen. And I guess in a way, it sounds like a big pebble stuck in a tire tread.

What could this be? Sorry if it's so vague but I have no other way of describing it.

Thanks 6GA.

Re: Clicking?

From what I've heard/read, that's the axle going bad. But check around the discs/brakes for rubbing/loose bolts.

Also check out Jon's (knox47) thread, he was having a slightly different noise than what you're describing, but some of the comments in that thread may help.

Re: Clicking?

perhaps it IS a pebble in the tread. but i'm thinking you probably already checked that. nothing stuck to the inside of the rim that could be taping the caliper or knuckle as it goes around?

Re: Clicking?

Thanks guys. I'll check things out when I have time later this week. It's finals week right now

Any other thoughts would be appreciated!

Re: Clicking?

CV joint would be my guess, one of my first cars back when I was younger was doing the same thing. The boot had torn and most of the grease had come out, causing it to make a clicking sound.

Re: Clicking?

I'm getting my CV joint/axle replaced this week. Every revolution is clicks when you are on the gas. That would be the clicking sound you are hearing if you have ever noticed grease on the inside of that side's wheel due to a torn boot.

Re: Clicking?

Ok, I've searched on youtube and out of all the cv joint noise videos I've seen, the noise seems different from what I'm experiencing. My CV boot looks fine too.

So I just google'd "clicking noise in parking garage" because that's when it's most noticeable and I finally found a video that has the EXACT same problem as mine. At around 0:07-0:09 seconds, 0:19-0:20 seconds, 0:36-0:40 seconds.

Here's the thread where I found it: http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f170/clicking-sound-rear-wheels-111010/

In a way, it sounds like a playing card flapping on a spoke. Maybe something brake-related?
