Did I get ripped off for this service?

It's never too late to start learning.

Experience is priceless.

+1. I once paid a shop over $300 to change out my front brakes and rotors with cheap car quest stuff.

After joining the forum and reading thru the DIY post and a service manual.. Car has never seen a shop since.

OP, it's the labour that jacked the cost up as well, I'm sure.

I have gotten a quote of about $600 for the timing belt/water pump by a mechanic that I have been to several times.

A few of those things you can do yourself, if you have a Haynes Manual and the right tools/space to work.

Fortunately, those repairs are not frequent.

I think i'll be getting someone to do my water pump, timing belt and clutch. Just because i don't think i can do it. It's due in a 30k miles or about 55k km

I had my seals on the timing side, pump, 4x belts(timing, balance,ac/ps), 2x tensioner pulleys, coolant flush done for $220-250 labor I think.

Pick up all the OEM parts yourself from the states. You're looking at ~4hrs labor book rate but it usually actually takes less.

Whoa seems like cheap labor!

Don't I need to actually raise the engine to access some stuff? Arg the job looks so big and scary. I don't wanna mess up with the timing belt etc. I'm pretty sure I have most of the tools. Maybe if I'm brave enough and have someone to help me out, I'll tackle the job.
