F23 rebuild

My f23 that's recently put in is burning about a quart of oil every 100 miles. So it's time to rebuild my old head and re ring this block. When I was looking for rings a saw an option for steel ring and was curious if they were any different from factory or would make a difference. I will be gutting the manifold as well when it's out.

Hmm.. Don't know what the factory rings are made of. Without question, if you are going through trouble of replacing the rings - you should upgrade to racing spec available in both OEM and custom sizes through:

Based on what information given?

OP, factory rings are made of steel and cast iron as these materials are wear-resistant. In the case of the F23A1 I think they're all steel. Before you purchase anything, though, I would have the cylinders checked for out-of-roundness. If the cylinders are out of spec then you'll need to bore or hone them, depending on how bad they are.

Before you even get that far I would check the valve seals to see if your problem lies solely with them. A compression a leak-down test will give you more guidance on how to proceed.

I acually already have a my old head at the shop getting completely redone. It's not just valve seals bad on this motor it smokes all the time. There's multiple signs that are showing rings. I'll check out raceeeg. I was looking at npr rings after checking the price on oem being almost 50 a piece.

Based on the fact that I want him to get race rings so there is no issue with burning oil, ever and you can gun it hard. There is no way the cylinders would wear before the rings would, let alone the cylinders getting out of round. I have never heard that happening on F23's. I'm sure it might if you put the engine under extreme forces/loads, but rings are the weakest point in the F23x motors, the sleeves are thick steel lined lol. To replace the rings, just get the nicer ones, why not.

You're right, a leak down test might not be a bad idea too.

Depending on how much you're willing to put into the re-build, you may want to consider a JDM F23A instead with low miles, might be doing that this summer.
