I have a 99 Accord EX, F23A1 engine that is burning oil due to a overheat/timing belt incident. We decided to get the car running properly so the kids can take it to college within a month. It appears that replacing the engine may be the quickest option for me.

There are companies that will sell low mileage engines from Japan, and others that have 120K++ miles on them (with good compression).

So, what should I look out for? Are the low mileage ones that much better?

What parts, if any, should I expect to have to replace?

Thanks in advance

no headache; another f23

if you dont mind some messing around, h23, the added torque is real nice. Especially mated to a t2t4... :peace:

^ Yeah but I don't think they are interested in that. It seems like they just want another engine that runs well. Stick to an f23 its the easiest, and cheapest.

I would love to mess around, but the time is too short. What is meant by "US spec motor"

Thanks

the "JDM" motors are good if you buy through the right company. i used JDM-RHD on ebay the tranny was shot. but the motor is mint was $1200 for both shipped think the motor was around $700 by itself. local junkyards want an arm and a leg for USDM spec and they all have way high miles and no compression test.

Check around your area, hopefully there should be some motor wholesalers. I paid $799 locally for my Japanese Imported F23A with less than 60,000 miles, 6 month warranty according to the wholesaler's policy. A Japanese imported F23A should be a direct fit (correct me if I'm wrong guys), as long as you use your stock engine harness & ECU. Also, swap over your various sensors, distributor, exhaust manifold, and intake manifold. If the intake manifold from the imported engine is the same design as the US version, you can probably just swap over the fuel rail and other necessary sensors. Make sure you keep track of where the sensor plugs goes, and use zip-lock bags to keep track of the bolts and miscellaneous parts.

I recommend getting a new oem clutch kit while your at it (if it's a manual), because it will be easier to do so while the motor and transmission is out. And replace the timing belt, balancer, and water pump. Inspect the new motor for oil leaks, and replace any oil seals if necessary before installing it into the car.

The Japanese imported F23A should have the black tops:

The US version (This one is a F23A4, but should be the same):
