I purchased new Boston acoustic speakers for the front doors and ran into a clearance problem. I need a good 1/4" of space for the speakers to mount flush. I tried using the spacer provided from Boston Accoustics but it is too deep and wont allow the door panel to clip in. I was pondering cutting out the factory plastic speaker mount backing. I ussually order from Crutchfield, which always provides Vehicle specific instructions and any installation kits if needed, but I found these for 40 bucks cheaper. I am wondering if I am missing something? Has anyone ran into this problem before?

Just found my answer on crutchfield
(Installation Details for your 1999 Honda Accord Sedan)

Use the factory speaker brackets.

Use the factory speaker grilles.

Cut out the back of the plastic factory cup or mounting bracket to provide enough depth for your new speakers.

yeah, you can cut the stock spacers/weather baskets...or you can make your own with non-porous wood or some ABS (aka "king starboard").

3/4" is about as thick a spacer as the door panel can handle.

2.8" mounting depth (2 4/5") is the absolute deepest you can put on a 3/4" spacer...it clears the window just by a C hair.

you may need to add a little bit to the spacer...but then you have only an extra 1/8-1/4" before the speaker or spacer hit the door panel.

the doors are a super tight fit :ughrun:

It ended up being that there wasn't enough clearance for speakers terminals, even bent at a 90 degree angle. So, I used a 100 watt soldering gun to cut/melt the backing and notched a place for the speaker wire. I was worried after reading about possibly having issues getting the window all the way down, but luckily no problems.

I ran into to this to when install front and rear speakers in my coupe. I found a brand named cadence which makes low-profile speaker with decent watts. You can get them from www.onlinecarstereo.com they fit no problem in the rear.

yeah i bought some abs spacers for my front 6.5 speakers. sorry i forgot how thick they were but they did the trick.

as for the 6X9s in my coupe, my diamond audio dropped right in with no problem at all. used the same holes from the stock ones
