Re: My garage build for auto detailing (UPDATED 7/26 PG 4) Shop lights installed

Holly shiz kinda makes me feel like a slob :eusa_wall:
I've painted cars out of my barn that I call my shop :lawl:
I couldn't imagine what I could do if it were as clean as your garage.

You could always do an overhaul of your garage to freshen things up.

Two quick eye candy pics.

4 bulbs on from the center

4 bulbs from center and 4 from the side on at same time. You can see a contrast in the difference of the color. 5000k vs 6500k. I like the 6500k much more because it gives a cleaner look illuminating the garage. I still need to put on the reflector on the base of the shop light, the one that's on the ground, and mount it to the wall as well. You can also see how much light it gives off to the right side of my car when comparing the 1st and 2nd picture.

Thank you. A lot of thought is going into this and I am very fortunate to have a bigger garage to allow me to do something many wish for.

Another update for you guys. This time it will be clear plastic storage drawers. First up is the area I am working on:

The first thing I did before doing anything else was to get all my measurements done, and make sure they are accurate and precise. This will allow me to get a diagram in my head to get a full blown scale of what my design options are, and how will the style come out to be. After some measurements, the Length came out to 40 inches, the Width came out to 17 inches, and the Height came out to 28 inches.

Initially, I wanted a two level design with a 4 quadrant set up because I thought 3 levels would look weird. After some thought, I began to search online for drawers that would fit my desired dimensions. While looking on google, I came across Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, and Target. All chains offered the style of drawers that I wanted, but I narrowed down to either Walmart or Home Depot.

I decided to stop by Home Depot first because it was only 5-10miles away from me verses going across the bay bridge, paying toll, and driving for 20-30miles. When I arrived there, I immediately went straight to find the organization section to browse around to see if I like what I saw online. I came across these two designs that sparked my interest.

The smaller ones on the left are 3 stacked up together. Measurements for those are 14'' Length, 14 3/8" Width, and 6 7/8" Height. With 3 the height comes to about 21''. Knowing that I can most likely fit 4, I did not like how short they were so I passed on that idea. Now, next to it are two medium size ones. Measurements for those are also 14" Length, 14 3/8" Width, and 10 1/4" Height. I put two together and they looked pretty damn good to me. I did some math in my head, and noticed I still have 7.5" left for my total height. I proceed to stack a small one on top of the two, and behold, I think I hit the spot.

Afterwards I bought it, I quickly went back to my house and did some test fitting. I would say I only have about half an inch to one inch of clearance left on the top.

Looking clean, nicely organized, good appealing look to it, nothing more I could of asked for. I ended the day by stuffing all my 3" pads, and 5.5" pads into the drawers. I will label them and reorganize them another day.

Stay tuned for the next update.

Re: My garage build for auto detailing (UPDATED 8/17 PG 5) More Storage drawers

Another update for you guys. Just threw out the old pile of shop lights from old house owner and wiped down the area a bit to clean it up. Afterwards bought some more drawers and stuffed in some of my microfiber towels.

Before

Afters

Stay tuned for next update.

Re: My garage build for auto detailing (UPDATED 8/24 PG 5) Eye Candy

A really small update for you guys. Whenever you are using halogen lamps as a light source to do paint correction, the number one problem is the heat it gives off. It just makes the whole work environment less comfortable because you have this strong ray of heat on your side and back all the time. So I bought a 20" fan to help relieve some of the problem and cool me down a bit when working with the lamps.

stay tuned for next update.

What machines are you working with? I just recently bought a Flex 3401. I'm loving it so far.

That's a nice machine/tool you purchased. So far my arsenal of machines are HF DA, GG6, Meg g110, PC7424XP. In the future I will purchase the Rupes21 DA, and the Flex Pe14 rotary. I been using a Dewalt rotary at work now for a year so far and I enjoy the power from the forced rotation machines, not that the DA can't achieve the same correction as well, but it will take longer.

Did you just begin to accumulate detailing supplies? Or you been doing this for a while now?

Re: My garage build for auto detailing (UPDATED 8/24 PG 5) Eye Candy

Just the last couple years. I've been doing friends and families and the odd randoms vehicles when I got the time.

I went with the flex over the bigfoot after a ton of reading/videos and much contemplating. I was using the PC before the flex and I have to say the machines aren't even comparable. The flex feels much more powerful and well built next to the PC.

I've never used a rotary yet but I'm not sure I'm really that interested in it either. (for now) The flex beasts through cutting compared to the PC and since I'm still just a weekend detailer I feel pretty confident in not ruining someones paint while getting the job done at an okay pace.

PS I'm super jealous of all the pads I see.

Have you used anything 3D? I've been using M101, M105, M205, SF4500, Klasse Twins .. I've got a decent amount of good MFs. ONR, Riccardo clay ..

I've been slowly collecting .. :Pshyco:

Thanks for the brief review on the Flex DA, sounds like a solid machine. When I first started at this hobby couple years back, I had the same thoughts as you regarding the rotary. But, until you give it a chance, and hone your skills with it, you will come to love it. At the moment I am still honing my skills with it on how to finish down with it properly. It is a tool like everything else as long as you respect the power of it, and know it's limits as well.

I have not tried any products from 3D yet, but I might try the Cut and med polish when I get a chance. How you like the Klasse twins? I am eager on trying the combo but it is expensive, and I'm not sure how it will stack up against other products.

It just went on sale actually, on the site I regularly order from. So I've only used it once... I did a 08 odyssey painted silver metallic. It ended up super glossy in the night street lights, was really impressed with it.

I also put a layer of carnauba over top of the sealant though.
