Help. Can't engage reverse gear.

I fixed it, but I am not sure exactly how I did it.

I took apart the shift linkage. (I't pretty easy, 4 bolts and the cover comes off along with the top lever.) But I did not see anything visually wrong with the mechanism.
So I took off the part that chooses which gear shaft to move, and moved them directly using a big screwdriver. All the gears could go in fine, except for reverse. I tried to apply more force to the reverse gear, and to agitate it a lot. And it could me my imagination, but I think I got it to go in a bit further than before, but not all the way in.

At that point I was out of ideas, and just put the shift linkage back together. Started the car, and tried to put it in reverse while playing with the clutch, and the gear finally went in. Everything seems okay now.

I am still not sure what was wrong or what I did. Maybe there was a metal flake jammed in there somewhere and I either crushed it or dislodged it.
