Moving to CA from IL - what about emissions?

So next week I'm making a permanent move from IL (Chicago area) to CA (Bay area). For years I've heard about California emissions standards vs. the rest of the US and I know that my car - 1999 Accord EXV6 - had 2 sub models: 49 State emissions and California emissions.

Now my question is this - does CA have some sort of law requiring conversion to CA emissions from 49 state emissions? If so, how does that work, how much does it cost, what exactly is done, and could I do it myself?

Thoughts? Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks a ton!

ah well. I'm slightly irritated that honda decided in 2000 to make their entire fleet CA compliant :/ silly. my fiance bought her car in OR and and had to have some work done on it to make it CA compliant and while it wasn't too costly, she can't remember exactly what was done. I hope this doesn't turn into a royal pain in the arse. Two weeks from today i'll be a CA resident and figuring all this out first hand heh heh

If you have family in IL, just keep it registered there. Thats what I do, my car is registered at my dads house in FL.

No emissions.
No Safety Inspections.
No excise tax.
Just $27/yr registration.

when i moved to CA, all i had to do was pass an emissions test. the only other thing i had to do in regards to registering was paper work. The car passed without a problem...

The Chicago area has pretty solid emissions/smog testing, I always pass that with flying colors... I wonder how it compares to CA smog testing... how much of a pain was it to get it registered/titled in a new state? (I've never done an inter-state move before.)

I second that!

If you're planning on modifying the car, it's best if it stays registered in a state that doesn't have so many restrictions.
