So to be honest. I'm not much of a car guy. I can name the car and type it is just from a look and some basic things. But I want to be able to learn more in depth things about a car like the engine works and slowly learn to build one. I have this dream of building an S15.

So my question is how did you guys learn so much about cars in general? Like even things such as how you came to know the engine names of cars and such.

Probably a stupid thread but hence why it's just a thought.

It basically boils down to research and the love for it. I came into the game when need for speed came out lol. I was like 10 and ever since then I researched and just kept on researching information that would lead me into knowing what I know. And what things that are not looked at. Ie. everybody talks about hp. I learned torque wins races and you need a hell of a good suspension to make it to good use. But you just got to want to be into this lifestyle. Its not for everybody

I'd say read as much as you can about how cars work. Also doing more "do-it-yourselfs" should also certainly help.

At least this is what seems to help for me.

Your best bet would be to start reading up on do it yourself guides and gaining experience from that. Even if it's simple pointless mods such as intake, header, exhaust, it's a learning experience to remove the old stuff and install the new stuff. I would also attempt to do maintenance on your car such as oil changes and simple fluid changes. You learn a lot from that. The most I believe you learn from though is probably brakes and suspension. They're tougher than fluid changes and helps you understand how things work while you are replacing them. There are also lots of articles on google as well that you can learn a lot about cars from. Forums are your friends as well.

What they all said. hours and hours and hours of time sitting in front of the computer screen reading random threads about everything. There is always something new to learn. Doin your own work on your car will really help your knowledge base. There is no better learning style than hands-on.

if you wanna build s15, join a forum that deals with that vehicle type and read posts, engine build threads, diy threads. search on interent and some magazines can be helpful.

I learned everything I know from hands on experience and mistakes that I made during that hands on time. Nothing teaches you how to fix a car better then breaking it yourself.

You can learn a lot from reading and photos. But for me, I learn best hands-on. That’s what she said.

So find someone knowledgeable to help you find a good clean S15, buy it, then spend hours tinkering with it in your garage with Haynes, etc manuals at your disposal. Start out with basic stuff like changing the oil, alternator, etc, then dive into internals.

I hadn't worked on a car in depth until this one. I bought it, began messing around with it, and learned over time through doing things on my own, reading, and this forum.

I was hands on in high school, unfortunately, never really had the space/tools to do much of the work on my own.

However, anytime I have someone helping me with the car or if it is at a shop, I am definately in there asking questions and getting my hands dirty.

I am hoping my Haynes will become my new best friend as I do work on the car in the future.

There are also online manuals that you can use as well that people have recommended on here.
