so I'm getting some money after xmas for a gift that's being returned... question is whether to spend it on a 55-200mm lens, or a 8.5 turn motor + speed control for the rally truck haha

Why not? He isn't wanting a high end setup. Not really getting a great quality zoom until the grand pricepoint. The 55-200 is just $250 or so. It is small, has VR, and from I have read performs really good for the price. I would personally love to have it as an lightweight/small alternative to my 80-200. The only other option around that range is the 70-300 probably and it is double the price.

But then again I think you guys are thinking of what is nicer and not what would work best for his needs. A zoom f2.8 is HUGE and heavy. I could never see myself carrying my 80-200 f2.8 as a walkaround, which is why I leave it behind lots. Will the pictures be better with it, no doubt, but I would have to bring a huge bag to store it and when it is is use my arms would be getting a tough workout haha

My 3 cents

I like my 55-200. I'm not about to spend a grand on a zoom lens so this was perfect for the price. I use it most when I shoot race cars. It gives me just enough zoom to shoot from the infield and has VR so when I pan and the cars go by the pics are still clear. A smaller f/ would be nice but for the price you can't beat the 55-200. Below are some sample pics I took with the lens...

thanks for the feedback guys, although I'm not sure it's fair to be comparing it against lenses that cost 5x as much or more lol. I'm not really looking to spend more than $300 at most on another lens. taking that into consideration, is there a better alternative than the 55-200mm or not?
