yep...i suck at photoshop...

I hate photoshop.

I hate browsing POTN because when people post pics, members ask what they did for PP, and they spew out a list of things.

If you have the talent, you know that you only use photoshop for exposure adjustments, dodging/burning, resizing, sharpening and white balance. (I might have missed a few)

I think anyone who wants to know if they're truly cut out for photography (and I'm directing this towards newcomers to the game, I've seen plenty of pics on here that disprove this point by the older members) you should try out a pre-electronic era SLR with black and white film, hand developed.

That is really the only way, although a little barbaric, to truly appreciate the art and how much talent there is in film photography, specifically black and white.

My point is, you can have the nicest dSLR on the planet, but if you have to go into photoshop to adjust lighting on your subject or fix things often, you're not all that great, even if you are considered a "professional" and make a career out of it.

Sorry about the rant, but photography these days is like 1/3 in the field and 2/3 behind the monitor these days. No one really has the appreciation for B&W and film and how freaking difficult it is to get the perfect shot and exposure in the same frame, not to mention develop it correctly later on.

So, pretty much props to you Ryan, lol, and anyone else who's at least taken a stab at film.

be like it is
the only adjustments in PS i do are pretty much standard wet darkroom techniques from film times. if i needed to, i could take a neg and do the same things with an enlarger...it would just take longer...lots longer :lawl:

now if only i could dev c41 at home :squintrun:

thats what I tried to include on the list... anything in PS that was mimicked from teh darkroom...

i think we should have a closed book exam on film photography for people here with dslrs to see how much the really know... like, why can red safelights be used and not blue? or what were eggwhites used for? or what is the compound used in monochomatic film? or what is chromogenic film? lol...

I know why red safelights can be used....eggwhites, I think I know what they were used for... but idk about the last two...

But I use PS mainly for stuff that can be done in the darkroom (remembering techniques from film photography in HS). Only sometimes do I do stuff that photoshop is known for, where I'd adjust levels, or use filters to enhance an image.

I hate photoshop.
I disagree.

I think the final product is what matters, not how you got there.

Also, why does it matter if we know about film processing?

I shoot digital, you shoot digital.
I understand digital post processing, you understand film processing.

Sounds like you're the one lacking in knowledge. :D

Note - NOT a personal attack. Just kidding around :p

No, I can PP the **** out of my photos in PS if I wanted to. Like I said, some post processing is okay, the stuff that was brought to photoshop from the darkroom is okay.

And I tried to not attack the people who have only shot digital, but are obviously good photographers. It just seems like a lot of people want to get into the hobby/business, but have no appreciation for the artistic and historic aspects of photography.

Just my last attempt to save film before digital fully eclipses it out of existence...

Maybe we should have a 6GA photo meet and we all make pinhole cameras? :lawl:

help this noob out

ISO: lower number = less grainy, best for bright sunny shot
high number = grainy, use for real dark night shots

shutter speed: lower the # = freeze time shots
mid # = some blur, good for panning shots
high #/seconds = only good for dannys setup where you run arround at night with a flash bu;b and flash at multiple angles

aperture: high number = everything is in focus, good for landscapes
low number = blurs background somewhat

macro is a setting in which the camera allows close up shots

did i get anything wrong?
