removing shift knob

this sounds like a noob question but i have tried twisting the knob looking or screw and still nothing is there any specail way to remove the stock shift know my my 98?

Turn it to the left to loosen it, it's just threaded on there.

and when it feels like its going to break twist harder and it'll come loose

The OEM knob clicks into the shift boot. You need to squeeze the sides first to separate the knob from the boot.
