Sri Vs Cai?

Well i have a good friend who is a mechanic i asked him a while ago about upgrading my intake system and he advised against it, he said that their could be problems with passing the states inspection. Has any one heard of this? And also what is hydrolocking,? Is it when water comes thru your Cai? And is it possible to have this occur in a sri? See There are to many factors in upgrading the intake , thats why I've been reluctant to upgrade i dont wanna Phuk up my car to sound or look cool !!!!

Get an AEM. Most AEM intakes are CARB exempt, I want to say they all are but I'm not sure. Hydrolocking is when the filter of the CAI becomes completely submerged in water and then sucks water into your motor. Now, since you cant compress water, your piston is trying to move up in the combustion chamber and compress something it cant. From there you can bend rods and so on, bad stuff. This kind of thing happens more often than most people would like to admit, it does happen. If you are going to use a CAI, just buy the bypass valve. They do work, no matter what people say. AEM did a test with an NSX, if an NSX can pull water in with the bypass valve then your Accord definatly can't. Keep in mind, the NSX was at WOT with the filter in a fish tank.

I have a SRI, you can find DIY's on how to make a heatshield for it to help block out a lot of the haet from your engine bay. I believe syclone on E-H.com has one on his website, I'll post it if I can find it. I really don't believe there a huge difference between CAI and SRI. You'd have to drop the intake air temp significantly to see a difference. 1% increase for every 5 degrees of temp drop.

I tend to disagree. CAI bring in a lot colder air. When I had my stock air system in there, I had my temp gauge somewhere in the middle between hot and cold. Now, it has droped to a quarter when I bought my CAI. Colder air is better, so I'd go with CAI. And along with hydrolocking, It's extremely hard to do unless you drive through a lake, flooded roads, or something along those lines. So just stay clear of all that and you'll be fine.

AEM makes a great intake. I have the V1 and its loud as balls. My friend with an F22 has an ebay brand and it sounds like something got killed in the engine. So if you dont care how your car sounds, then get a cheap *** one off ebay. If not get the best with AEM. You cant go wrong.


As far as the SRI's. You wont hydrolock your engine no matter what. Its so hard to do on an CAI that you wouldn't even have to worry about it. But if you're so worried about it, you can also just buy a SRI. As for getting a heat shield. That you be your best bet to bring temps down in your air intake. Other then that, its up to you, we've given you plenty of information on this, so I hope it helps you a lot.

Your temp gauge has almost nothing to do w/ your intake, thats the temp of the engine itself, not the air coming in.

Your stock intake is in essence...a CAI, all be it a highly restrictive one. SRI sucks in a larger volume of air and is noticeable louder than a CAI. As far as the heat issues, make your own decision, the pipe is made of aluminum, aluminum conducts heat, wanna keep heat down?, get it coated or buy a plastic intake.

As far as CAI's go, colder is better, most of these have a smaller diameter piping to keep the air flow at a higher rate so you're getting air in faster, just not a lot of it. As far as hydrolocking goes, if you're dumb enough to drive through water in the first place you should never have bought an intake.

I've had both, the aem CAI pissed me off, made this high pitched squealing sound, it is now a charge pipe on my brother's civic. My DC short ram, for sale, I'm back to OEM. I liked the SRI better, sure its louder, louder than my exhaust.

LMAO, dude i live in miami so i basically drive through hurricanes on a daily basis. when it rains it rains. i went to my friends mechanic shop the day after a big storm, and he had an integra, and 2 civics there. when i asked what happened, he said they all hydrolocked. lol, so yes, that's my reason against CAI but it's because of location too.

oh and also, remember, if you take off your splash guard like most people tend to do, you have a better chance of water splashing on your CAI. but if you have your splash guard still, you'll be probably 60% safer than you would without it.

i wouldnt get a cai cause we do get an inch of rain at a time once in a while. 2 weeks ago some streets were shut down because of too much water. some cars even got stuck in the water. sri ftw. plus i got mine for $50
