Steering wheel control button

I didn't use anything other than the standard controls. If my memory serves me, the green\red stripe wire in the harness is the wire which controls the factory head unit. The wheel control buttons are simply 2 wires, one which is ground and the other leads to the green/red stripe wire. However when a button is pressed, a different resistance value is sent out to the head unit. Took the faceplate off the new head unit and metered out the resistance of when the head units volume was turned up and down and simply switched out the resistors on the back of the wheel control to match the head unit and tada!......:action-smiley-042:

That's exactly the info I was looking for, as that definitely saved me some metering time. This is definitely worth a DIY both with/without using the PAC (what I mean by this is adding the controls to a car without any steering wheel harness like my EX 4cyl coupe). Thanks again for the info....

my only concern with a DIY is that the numbers may only be unique to the head unit I'm using. I wouldn't want anyone upset with me if they swapped out the resistors and what not, and it didn't work. But if that seems to be what the masses want, then I will most definitely do one.

Makes sense. All you'd need to say is that there are conditions/things you did that are specific to your head unit that may not apply to all head units, so people need to think about that before getting into it.

I still think telling how you did this could get people who want to do this going in the right direction. But, up to you man.

hmm alright so in my sisutation, i have a 98 accord EX w/ the factory volume controls on my steering wheel. Ima put a JVC radio i have laying around and already ordered the aftermarket radio harness off ebay. So what do i have to do when im wiring the two harnesses together to get my volume controls to work with the aftermarket radio?

Well in my case I took apart the faceplate and metered out the resistance of when the volume up and down buttons were pressed on the headunit. Mine ended up being a direct short to ground for the volume down and roughly 326 ohms for the volume up. Next I took out the wheel control and disassembled it, found which resistor controlled the volume down function. Placed a jumper over this resistor to bypass the resistance and created a direct short to ground. Next I found the resistor that controlled the volume up and replaced it with a matching resistor to the headunits volume up resistance. Reinstalled the controls and placed a meter from a grounding point to the factory wiring harness wire which is GREEN W\RED STRIPE. When the wheel controls down button was pressed, I got a direct short to ground and whe n the up was pressed, I got the same resistance that the head unit required for volume up function. Ran 2 wires through the head units wire grommet and soldered each one to the corresponding down and up locations. Connected both wires from the back to the factory harness wire (green w\red stripe) and tada!

This is probably as clear as mud, which is why I hesitate on doing a DIY. So please try this at your OWN risk. I couldv'e just gotten lucky.:thumbup:
