i'm installed my sony cd player into my 240sx using the adapter harness ... everything is working wonderfully with the exception that the memory isn't working ... i have to enter my settings every time i turn on the stereo ... i hooked up my 12v power with the memory wire from both the car side and the stereo side together ... is that the wrong way to do it? should i have connected the 12v wire to 12v and memory wire to memory?

You don't have a constant 12V supply connected only a switch 12V supply connected. When you turn the key off, all power is cut from the headunit.

so what do you suggest i do? ... is there another way other than running a wire from the battery to the memory wire? i've seen this problem before when my brother wired up his own head unit, i fixed it but i can't remember what i did

In our cars there are ports under the dash for accessories, switched and "always on". Perhaps your 240 has something similar?
