You gotta take the brand of tires into consideration aswell. Not all tires are made equally.
I run a Nexen N5000 215/40 on a 17x9.5 and has a bit of stretch and i have a cousin that has same wheel specs and same tire size but his are Federals and they seem more stretched than mines.

I'd run nothing smaller than a 215/45 on 17" rim. 215/40/17 just looks way too small for our cars. Bit if you drop your car low enough, the gap will fill in.

I had 17x9 +29 with 215/45/17 nankang ns1 tires and it was perfect on my sedan IMO.

I always say 17s =45 sidewall
18s=40 sidewall
19s=35 sidewall
Just to make up for the difference in diameter.
For your application, if you are planning on dumping it then I'd say 205/45 all the way around.

That's because the sidewalls of the Federals are much softer. I run federals all around, and they are amazing stretched.

I probaly forgot to be more specific but the reason why i said 17x9 and 17x8 is because I'm getting a staggered set up, yes yes i know i cant rotate my tires, but I'll be okay with that.

Scope my ride thread. I'm on a staggered setup 17x8 +37 with hankook 215/45 and 17x9+37 w/ bf goodrich 225/45. About to be all hankooks. It's a mild stretch. But I'm not uber low. I like it, and could go about an inch lower if I brought in the camber a degree. If I was trying to stance it id do 205/45 up front and 215/45 rear. Any profile lower than 45 on 17's decreases diameter too much to look good. And will jack up fuel economy. And your speedometer will be off.
