You have either the f23a1(non ulev) or f23a4(ulev) engine. Easy way to tell...does the top of your engine say just "VTEC" or does it say "ULEV" anywhere on it.

You can take the car to any dealer and ask them to check if any recalls are due or any have been done by just looking at your cars VIN#. It should be in your registration and on your car, bottom driver side of window when looking from outside.

As for timing belt, if you don't know and cant ask the old owner when they did it...just go do it for your peace of mind. Don't forget to do everything included. ie. timing belt, waterpump, balance shaft belt, Balance Shaft Seal, Front Crankshaft seal, Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal, power steering and A/C belts, coolant flush, thermostat.

look at the stamp on the engine block. its just to the left of the exhaust header, under the coolant hose.

another easy way to tell is the valve cover, unless yours has been changed, but odds are it hasnt been. if the vc says "16 valve" its the a5, if it says "ulev" its the a4, and if it just says "vtec" its the a1. as stated, the f23a5's only came in dx's. a1's and a4's came in the rest. idk if theres any pattern to which motors came in which models, im pretty sure ive seen both in all of the models, haha.
