Gonna bump this up again instead of making a new thread. Got the CEL of death not long ago. "P0740 TCC Circut Malfunction. aka automatic transaxle malfunction". Can anyone tell me exactly what this means besides, "yep you need another trans, 5spd haha". THX

No I haven't tried it now I think it is too late though, I am loosing about a quart of ATF-Z1 every 2-3 days, The shifting has gotten worse, and I found that little code there. I'm just gonna rebuild it then sell the car.

take it to the shop and see what's wrong with it....might be fixable...if not, research about doing a manual swap and call it a day!

If you're going to pay someone to rebuild it why not keep it at least through the warranty? If you're going to just dump the car take the cheap route and have a salvage trans put in.

It'll be a cash job, no warranty from a friend of my cousin.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys but I'm not looking for a solution here anymore, I am looking for What TCC Circuit malfunction P0740. means. I want to use the honest knowledge here to find this out, rather than taking it to a shop, I don't trust mechanics.

I'm not sure what your trouble code is saying but this is what the ATSG manual says:

DTC:
P0740

D4 Lamp [instrument cluster, D4 on right side]:
OFF

MIL Lamp [aka check engine light]:
ON

Symptom:
Lock-up Clutch Does Not Apply
Lock-up Clutch Does Not Disengage

Possible Cause:
Mechanically Bad Lock-up Control Solenoid
Mechanically Bad A/T Pressure Control Solenoids
Lock-up Shift, Control or Timing Valve Problems
Faulty Torque Converter
Faulty Speed Sensor

Good Luck, I'm still trying to figure out my stuff too.

DUDE Thank you that is exactly the info I was looking for. reps for joo. This actually confirms my original suspicion that the solenoids are the culprit.

So what if the D4 light is on and not flashing AND the CEL light is on?

Derek,

DTC P0740: Problem in Lock-up Control System
NOTE: Record all freeze data before you troubleshoot.

Recheck for code P0740 after troubleshooting. NO - Go to step 2. NOTE: Do not continue with this troubleshooting until the causes of any other DTCs have been corrected.
2.Measure the line pressure. Is the line pressure within the service limit? YES - Go to step 3. NO - Repair the hydraulic system as necessary.
3.Replace the Lock-up Control Solenoid Assembly set.
4.Turn the ignition switch OFF, and reset the PCM memory by removing the BACK UP fuse in the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box for more than 10 seconds.
5.Using the scan tool, check to be sure that the engine coolant temperature is 176°F (80°C) or above .
6.Drive the vehicle at 55 mph (88 km/h) for more than one minute.
7.Recheck for code P0740. Does the OBD II scan tool indicate code P0740? YES - Replace the transmission and torque converter. NO - The system is OK at this time.
