ok so at some point between when I pulled old motor and got the new one in and running my speedo and odometer stopped working and it threw a code for a VSS. replaced the VSS with a new one and still no speedo and still throwing the VSS code. Does anyone now how I would go about checking the wires for the VSS to make sure there's no problem there?

other then that the only thing I could think of is that the gear inside the tranny that spins the VSS gear may be broken. which doesn't make sense cause it was fine before I pulled the motor and trans and its not like it was dropped or banged around at all before put on the new engine and dropped back in.

any other suggestions to how to find my problem would be appreciated. This is one of the last few things I have to fix before I get tuned :peace:

It may just be broken bro, if it's not wiring related. When I started my car 2 days ago for the first time in 9 months, I proceeded to ensure fluids and then boost around the block. It wouldn't stay running longer than 7 minutes, understandably because the battery has been dead so long and needs to charge. What didn't make sense is that the car shut off around the 7 minute mark and remained dead, NO LIGHTS AT ALL ANYWHERE - NO POWER! This tells me that the car drained the battery which charged while being jumped to a car, but the alternator somehow "CORRUPTED" over these 9 months and does not work any longer to support the charge. Does this make sense? FML.. I now also need to get a new FKing alternator... :skurred:

We're talking about a well-working used alternator here, possibly becoming corrupted for NO apparent reason. Maybe something similar happened to your VSS.

Check the plug that is on the vss and all of the wires, one may have been damaged while doing the swap. Also, did you do a 5 speed swap or was it a 5 speed from the factory?
