So I finally got around to a project I've been wanting to do since the first month I had my new car. The hub caps on my car were in terrible shape. Curb rash and paint peeling everywhere. So with my options either being buy cheapo ones that look weird with no center "H" (girl at my work has them on her car, they look so cheap), or spend over $100 on new ones, I decided to just take matters into my own hands and paint them myself.

I don't think you're supposed to use paint thinner on plastics...? Someone chime in on that one if I'm wrong, but I just decided not too. Seemed like a bad idea. So instead I went through a 6 pack of 180 grit on ONE hub cap. I have to go to the store today and get 4 more packs for the other caps.

My process was simple, sand with 180 grit to smooth out curb rash and get old paint off. Next, spray on 2 light coats of Duplicolor Grey Wheel Paint. Then I wet sanded with 400 grit, and sprayed on a heavy coat to give it a wet look.
I thought about baking them in the oven, but it gets so hot in the garage outside that I figure I'll just let them sit in there a day after painting to let them fully cure.
I've only got one done today, I'll finish the others later when I have more time.

Sorry for the rambling... tell me what you guys think.

piczors of car on steelies :smash:

Looks like a job well done Tyler. And I agree the factory hubcaps look better than most anything an auto store has. The silver paint you used also looks a little darker than the factory silver, which I think will look good on your car since it's black.

I'm just kidding, I don't need to see that. :lawl: Steelies do have a personality about them though.

Yeah you can post pics from your phone, I use Photobucket mobile.
