don't go 225/50 they would look so bad.
18x9 + 35 you just need a roll
your tires can be 215 40 17 or 225 35 17
those would look good ^
nankang NS-II comes in smaller size tires, but its cheap

I stretched a feddy 225/40 on a 9.5 +35 and it doesn't rub. For a 9, I'd do 215/40. Federals stretch really really nicely.

do you have a picture where it shows how far the lip sticks out from the tire ?

I'd say 215/45. Maybe Falken FK452.. that's what I'm using.
the main goal to get a really good stretch for the lip not to be excessively exposed, But also wanting a summer performance tires that will stick good on aggressive driving not a lot of the cheaper tires will make that happen.

Just drive carefully and don't curb your wheels and you should be fine :D I havn't curbed for the longest time. However, if your friend is new at driving and can't park right, I'd suggest he get proper tires and wheels :D
