without front licence plates legal?

Well here is the actual code for California.

5200. (a) When two license plates are issued by the department for use upon a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which they were issued, one in the front and the other in the rear.
(b) When only one license plate is issued for use upon a vehicle, it shall be attached to the rear thereof , unless the license plate is issued for use upon a truck tractor, in which case the license plate shall be displayed in accordance with Section 4850.5.
Amended Sec. 27, Ch. 594, Stats. 2003. Effective January 1, 2004.

When i bought my car it only came with one plate, so far so good.

Cali is rediculous. I got pulled over with a warning when I wasn't rocking my front plate. BUT, if you have a Lexus, new BMW, Benz, or a Range Rover cops don't seem to mind. Most of these higher top end cars can pull off limo tint all around as well and cops don't seem to trip.. (well in my town, don't know about more southern cities)

I never had one in Cali and never got a warning or anything, but I know a lot of people who did. As far as I know tho, they only got fix it tickets, so just keep your front plate assembly, and take your chances, if you get a ticket, put it back on and get it signed off
