Won't Crank

But basically doing it is a quick test.

stay on w/ click = dead starter solenoid
stay on w/o click = dead starter signal
turn off = dead battery

dim, but not crank= opens a new keg

NOTE: this is a basic voltage check, it is not designed to replace components w/o confirmation

Yup!! You're right about the auto off, but it has no effect with the key in the ignition though. When you start the car with the lights on, they stay on.

But this is a great basic check!

turn on the headlights (assuming you don't have an Ex) and try to start the car.

Do the headlights turn off, dim alot, or stay normal?

They dim just a tad. That's even with the new battery. I had been testing with the dome light, and like a moron, left it on. So I am waiting for the battery to recharge and I will try the other suggestions.

Ok, I tried jumping the starter by clipping a jumper lead to the starter from the positive terminal on the battery and it wouldn't crank. I also put a test light lead on the starter lead and the negative terminal, and when I turned the ignition the light came on. So it seems like It's safe to say at this point that it is the Starter?

Test light is fine too. I just always use multimeters. Haha! Did you try the test light on the cable coming down from the battery as well? There should obviously always be voltage there, key on, off, whatever. After you do that, yes, starter.

Try hitting the end of it with a hammer a time or too as well.

If the lights dim and the engine doesn't crank...

Pull the starter, hook it up while removed, watch it, have someone turn the key to crank.

Make grinding noises? Get a new one.

Well, if he charged his battery and still nothing, he probably has starter issues.

But I was wondering as well exactly where his power was going myself but I think he mentioned leaving a light on in the car or something.
