I don't want him to get happy with the volume knob and kill the subs 20 minutes after he hooked everything up lol

why is there no point in running under 2 ohms? what's the point in buying a 1200 watt amp to use half of the power? for that he should just purchase an amp that does 600@ 2 and call it a day.

LOL@tspence73 being an idiot...i agree even though he helped me out with planning a 3 way setup. i've always had luck setting the gains with a dmm. don't trust myself yet doing it by ear.

ill prolly go with some sort of mutli meter. They're like 10 bucks and being a noob, the last thing I want is to just mess around and **** something up lol.

hence the importance of tuning using the volume knob to set gains...i can "crank" it up to 40 and not be afraid of losing anything. i can (and do with no hesitation) turn up my sub via the epicenter and make it loud...very loud...

less resistance = lost energy. youre making more power, yeah, with extra heat. heat is the enemy of electronics. if 2 ohms is better than 4, then why arent more people running 1/2 or 1/4 ohm configs? think about that...google it...

you took advice from tspence? :crazyrun: :ughrun:

i've "retuned" my stereo probably 4 times in the past 30 days, and am going to do it again soon. never, ever used a dmm. ive never, ever lost an amp or driver (besides a stock 6.5" running off the headunit...but...come on...). ive been in this hobby since i was 17, installed in a few cars, and haven't managed to **** anything up beyond repair.

educating yourself is better than a piece of electronics. then take that education, and use it as a base for that piece of electronics.

just having it doesn't mean it'll solve all your problems.

Not sure if you know this, but those sundown amps can run @ .5 ohms daily with no issues. 1 ohm is no sweat for the amp. yeah 2 ohms is better but for that he can save coin buying an amp that does 600-700@ 2 instead of buying a .5 stable amp and not use it to it's fullest potential.

i dont know because i dont stress over trivial stuff like bragging rights. because that's what low impedance is...bragging rights.

the only advantage is more power and a bit more efficiency at lower volumes.

and i didnt say he should buy a .5 ohm stable amp. my question was: if low impedances are so awesome, why is everyone NOT using .5 ohms? or .25 ohms? (that's not including the OEM systems in some newer cars...those are freak shows :lawl: )

no point in running under 2 ohms. thats straight from zed audio.

again...no point. with that much power on tap, he probably wont have to turn the gain up much, if at all. i have one rca providing signal from a 2v headunit, branching off an external XO, into a signal processor, then into the sub amp. the gain knob is not a volume knob, but it gets obnoxiously loud at anything over about 1/5 of the way up (400w on a 350w sub, sealed).

i believe that's also straight from zed...but their site is fuxored and i cant find the pdf i want. i know that jl says to set by dmm...but i trust steve mantz a LOT more than pretty much any amp maker short of robert zeff (arc) and the like.

While you point out a very valid statement you are missing the value it passes. You simply don't want to run anything under 2 ohms if you want sound quality.

While 2 and 4 ohms can be much more efficient and clean, they also don't push as much power... theoretically due to resistance. Each amp has it's owm amp/power curve so it would be unfare to say 1ohm amps are stronger than 2/4 ohm amplifiers. Price is also a big factor. For example a clean 1ohm 1600w RMS amp built in Korea costs about $700. A handbuilt amp built in USA like ZED (I think) or Arc (for sure 100% hand made in USA) will cost you double to triple that.

It takes A LOT to audibly hear the difference between these amps. Normally at higher volumes you will notice the most.

I suggest a head unit with at least 4V pre-outs for 1KW rms+ BTW.

I only have those ****ty subs that handle barely any power lol. So for now I'm gonna be running at 2 ohm most likely depending on which amp I decide to go with (I have a couple finalists lol). But later on Im deff gonna upgrade the subs and we'll see then where I want to go with the whole thing.
