OK, WTF...
I took off the oil cap while the engine was at idle and there is a pretty hefty stream of exhaust coming out!!! Not black or blue or smelly, just clear. Same with tailpape, its not burning oil... What should i think of this...

Misfire gone.

Readjusted valves, changed spark plugs, changed dist. cap + rotor.

OK wtf....
IT DIDNT COME UP... until yesterday

I was flooring it in one, kept the RPM before redline, then shove trans into D4. immediately the CEL kept blinked, but never stayed on. code disappeared.

again, wtf?

whats going on....

lol why the hell are you flooring your autotragic?! these transmissions can't handle being floored. Only people with a 5 speed can pull that off. Get ready for a tranny rebuild soon if you think this is bad. :dunce:

I plan on doing the 5speed swap

just need to make sure the engine will last...

Me and a friend did compression testing.

All cylinders were near 200PSI, and none were out of spec.

The spark plugs looked kind of overheated, but according to my mechanic its because they are iridium plugs.

I have recently replaced the distributor cap + rotor + spark plug wires.

After scanning it again, I got cyl1 misfire p0301
and mitchell ondemand tells me to swap the plugs (i did 4 and 1) and it still flashes the CEL when driving agressively. Next step is to swap the fuel injectors from 4 to 1 and see if the problem moves to cyl4

What is your guys' opinion on this?

Good compression, good spark, probably good fuel injectors... my guess would be some sort of internal carbon buildup that causing preignition.

Spark plugs tend to have a tougher time jumping gaps during compression stroke, just because your plugs might spark outside the cylinder, doesnt mean they work under full load. Okay, in simpler terms...check your plug gaps...and check your wire resistance. Check your distributor cap and rotor for wear or black burns.

BTW, compression loss is normal..."wind coming out of oil cap"...place a peice of paper over the hole...if it sucks to the valve cover you know its not excessive because it still can maintain negative pressure in the engine. Its a very crude test but it works.

The spark plug in cylinder1 ( the misfiring one ) looked a little bent. I just have to drive it harder so the code stays on and I can see if the misfire moved to cyl4.

The plugs I put were iridium, and using feeler gauges, they seemed to be within the honda NGK spec.

I am going to check the resistance too, but I just changed the wires + coils (accel prefab kit). and same with the distributor rotor + cap (autozone brand).

As for carbon build up, I'm not sure... I've seafoamed twice, and sprayed carb cleaner into the throttle body a few times. I can't get the intake manifold out, all the nuts are seized onto the screws and it comes out with the screw. How can I check, and where would a carbon buildup cause misifiring?

Do you guys think its ok to start getting parts for the 5spd swap? My friend found a 2000 lx manual with 88k on it.

I had a similar problem like this except it was cylinder 2 for a customer and we changed the plugs, wires, rotor, and cap and it did the same thing.

Then we finally came to the conclusion that it was the distributor that was bad. Changed it out, and it ran like a beauty.

You might want to consider that.

I swapped out the customers bad dizzy for my dizzy just to make sure it was the problem and it was. I also had the same symptoms as you when I went full throttle.. The car would sputter and backfire at 5k and above.
