when there is not enough oil in the engine, the car will accelerate but bug out a lot. You feel it on the vtec a lot

i had this exact problem the guys at honda said there wasnt enough oil to allow vtec to engage or somethin bout the oil pressure wasnt enough so all they did was fill it back up with oil and problem fixed

The oil change will be coming, but how do I clean the solenoid?

Your best friend will be a Haynes Manual for all basic work. I bought one when I bought my car, hasn't let me down yet. I believe it just comes out and can be cleaned with brake cleaner, let it dry after. Get the manual, it's like 20 bucks.

OK, there are two reasons (I've experienced both of them) why this is hapening

1st) If your car is low on oil, this will cause it to go into "safe" mode.
That prevents the revs from going past 4K RPM's
You must add oil, or get an oil change and reset teh CEL

2nd) your VTEC solenoid is clogged.
You must remove teh VTEC solenoid.
There's a spring loaded thing that's probably stuck (which is what happened to me)
This is caused by dirty oil
Push it in and out to free it up.
It would help to get an oil change right afterwards.

Yeah, I read that thread. I feel reassured knowing that I wasn't the only one with this problem. I'm going to be waiting on your instructions.

OK, first you want to located where you VTEC solenoid is.
If you're facing the car from the front, The solenoid is locted just in front of the upper left hand corner of the valve cover.

After you locate it, you must remove three bolts

Once done, remove the bracket holding the VTEC connectors.
PS...This is what people would tap into when creating a VTEC indicator light

Once done, pull the solenoid off the housing.
Don't worry, there will be a little oil there

After removing the solenoid, look at housing and you sill see a spring loaded actuator
This actuator moves up and down into the soleniod

That part is probably stuck. What you have to do is free it up by pressing on it.
That will compress the spring and release it a little.
You may have to do it about 10 times B4 it's free playing
If you want you can spray some carb cleaner there also

Once done you can put a little oil on your finger (or in a small top) and put it around that area.
Put everything back together.
Make sure you put the bracket holding the VTEC connectors on TOP and not in between the solenoid and housing.
It should between the top of the screw/bolt and the metal part where the solenoid is.

Follow this link to clear your CEL


Start the car and let it get into normal operating temperature.
If all goes well, the CEL should stay off and you should be able to go past 4K RPM's
I do recommend changing your oil asap

It didn't work.

And it looks like mine had a lot less oil than yours did. Looks like the only other option is an oil change, because I already added a quart of oil in vain. Should I change the oil before, after, or while I replace my timing belt?

Are there any other solutions to this problem?
