5 Speed whining

I have a 4cylinder 5 speed and lately its been making this whining noise from the transmission. It almost sounds like a supercharger.But it does it while in gear even if I don't give it any gas. If I put it in neutral and it kinda winds down and stops until i put it back in gear. Anyone have a clue what my problem could be?

Also the car has 152,000 miles on it, but the clutch seems to have been replaced not too long ago.

I'd start with checking your fluid level. It could be running a little dry.

r u sure it's from the tranny and not ur speakers?

sounds like a ground problem if it's from the speakers.... if it's from the tranny, i have no clue.... when was the last time u change the fluid?

aha mine makes th at winning sound when i have my zune hooked up to my stereo, it sounds cool lol

I just bought the car in November so I don't know when the fluid was last changed. I'm pretty sure its not coming from the speakers, but I did have my iPod hooked up through the tape deck when it was doing it. but its wierd that it doesn't do it when the tranny is in neutral.

the whining noise get louder as the car/motor goes faster, so u'll hear nothing at idle.... check your grounds and lemme know what u find

Which grounds should I be checking?

If it turns out not to be the speakers, it most likely will be a input drive gear problem within the transmission. This gear is most likely worn, and its teeth are no longer making correct contact with the speed gear below it (or next to it in this case since it's a transaxle). The noise WILL be heard in neutral because the input shaft is still moving (when you dont hear it, it's probably just because the input shaft speed is too low to make any audible whine) and it should also be heard in every gear. This noise will only follow ENGINE speed and not ROAD speed. I believe there is another member here selling a low mileage 5spd trans. Hope this helps!

I'd start with checking your fluid level. It could be running a little dry.

If the fluid were low, he would hear an audible moan/groaning noise. This would be a whole another can of worms. His bearings would wear out faster, causing more debris in the fluid, eventually destroying the transaxle.
