Re: 6 gears > 4 [6spd + 3.2 swap]
Nice nice, glad to hear everything is done. Any pics of the ending process?
Thanks man. I have some photos, I actually left my camera there so when I get it back I'll post some up.
We need to combine our photos and come up with captions for each one, etc. Hope to finish it relatively quickly. It will be pretty long, lol.
Can you describe the vibration? Is it so bad that it makes your hands tingle when holding the wheel?
I was thinking about getting the next step up in stiffness but now I'm not so sure. However I have read that the vibration in the Innovative mounts lessens over time after they "break in."
It's only at idle, and going into first. Basically the steering wheel and whole front dash vibrates, and you can feel it through the seat as well. It isn't bad enough to make my hands tingle. It gets worse when you have the A/C on. Some people don't care about that kind of stuff, but this car is my dd and I drive people (work, family, etc) sometimes and I don't want it to be as noticeable as it is now.
The reason I don't like it is that my car is over 10 years old. So now all the other little rattles it had are more noticeable when idling. These mounts are great if you race or track your car, but I don't. Like I said, if I still hate them by the time next year rolls around, I'm swapping them for stock J32 mounts.
Where did you read that they break in?
My car vibrates like mad when the a/c is on, other than that its not terrible. Glad to see you got it done and are enjoying it. Did you happen to use the IMRC? Any CELs? ( I have a few I dont know how to get rid of) Maybe thats something Rich can cover in the DIY.
Yeah it gets worse when you turn on the A/C. IMRC? If that's what I think it is, then no...but I'll wait to see if we're thinking of the same thing. And no CEL's, hopefully it stays that way. lol I actually had an ABS light on going in (bad rear right wheel speed sensor)...now it's not illuminated. Need to check with him to see what that means, even though I'll replace the sensor regardless.
Good deal. Glad it all came together. Definitely in for pics. Are you gonna work on the CC and replacing the mounts or are you cool with them as-is?
And I might not have been as much help as I wanted but I had my hand in a few parts.
Cruise control is supposedly functional, but I never got around to trying it. I will within the next couple weeks though, and let you guys know. Mount wise...I'm going to see what happens. Maybe they'll break in a little, or maybe I'll get use to it...or maybe I'll still hate it after several months. If that happens, I'll be going back to swap them out for stock J32 mounts. For now, I'm riding it out.
Congratulations! On the swap and all that. It is definitely like a brand new car. Take some pictures and a video when you get a chance! I am excited about seeing it at IA... and riding in it? -_-
Thank you Matt. It is a completely different car. It's weird seeing a manual gear level and boot where the auto shifter was. The car really is transformed, like all the people who've swapped have said. Now I know what they mean. It was very strange the first time I drove it...it didn't feel like MY car, it felt unfamilar and foreign. But that quickly changed.
I will be taking some photos and posting them here. As for video...welllll I think I'll wait until my technique has gotten better, haha. I get around okay, but it's not super smooth just yet. Haven't driven a stick since highschool...lol.
Congrats man, I'm glad all is well.
Every 6spd owner gives me the inspiration of following in their footsteps and now you've become one of them, seriously.
Even though I haven't had my av6 for that long, I someday would want to attempt this swap. Only issue is I haven't been in SA,Tx for long and do not really know shops I can trust and that I know have the knowledge.
6spd owners are very passionate about their cars from what I've seen/read. It is motivational to hear them talk about it, certainly affected me. Advice: do not rush this, source your mechanic (if you're not DIY'ing it) and find out what their capabilities are, or if they have extra parts. Get an idea of how long it will take, and make sure you are prepared for anything.
Congrats I'm happy for you. Getting a manual was the best thing ever. I miss my 6thgen but every time I row through those 6 gears it puts a smile on my face. You'd eat my car for breakfast with that engine haha. Good luck with everything and can't wait to see pics of it
Well I'm pretty sure with my current skills, it would be a close race, haha. But thanks for the well wishes. I agree manual beats the hell out of an auto, both performance and fun wise. Whenever I would watch Top Gear, seeing them driving with passion and felt like that was severely lacking in my driving experience with my car. Now, I feel more like a true enthusiast...it is glorious. lol
The J32 is really something. It's only slighty taller than the J30, and is such a better motor in so many ways. It was ahead of its time, really. At least for Honda.
I helped make that car what it is today. I damn well better get a ride!
Yes you did.

I should be better at driving by the time IA rolls around. I guess you're still planning on going?
btw it was cool getting to meet you and see your car in person.
Thanks man.
Glad You made it back safe! In for update
Me too. Tbh I was a bit nervous about getting back, but it went fine. There was some bumper-to-bumper stop n go traffic out of Chicago, which was a pain, but after it opened up...fun fun fun.
Updates coming...
