Honestly I'd go bluetooth. Three adapters have broken (Chinese Quality!) but they're $10! I have three good ones (work, home, in my car) and it's still better than the real ($$$$) scanner I bought a decade ago!
Well, I thought I'd make a contribution to this thread. Code P1456 is a gas cap code, and P1457 is the vent valve under the car on the canister box. Also if you jump the #9 (1)brown and #14 (6)lt blue spots, you can get the ABS codes. And yes, my 99 has both the p1457 and P0420 codes present, which means I've got a bunch ahead of me once it warms up (as I also have a rusty fuel tank, which requires dropping the rear subframe).
