^easy to see on the side mount, slightly more difficult to see on the front, and a hassle to see on the rear. Nonetheless, all are visible.
If its the motor mount and you only feel/hear it in reverse, its more than likely the rear motor mount. With that being said when one breaks, the others will soon follow if you don't take care of it quickly.
If this goes on for a while it also stresses the transmission mounts. Its kind of a chain reaction. So, if this is the problem take care of it soon!
I am basing all of this on the fact that you said the "clunk" sound is coming from the front of the car and it seems to be happening around the time you shift into gear. I have had this problem twice in about a three year period because I replaced the motor mounts with an aftermarket product the first time, and they were inferior quality.
Does your car make a "thud" sound when you initially shift into reverse or is it only when you shift into D4?

do i have to jack the front up and look from underneath for any? i know what the side mount looks like....

The rear is the only one you should have trouble seeing. It's pretty well obstructed from any angle you look at it from. I was able to see mine (V6) with a flashlight looking over the back of the engine (it's located at the rear center of the engine), but I still couldn't tell if it was broken or not.
I took it to a shop, they told me it was broken (no charge), and I changed the front and side but worked for two days on the rear and ended up taking it back for them to do. The rear mount is a B!%@# to get to!

it happens when i hit the brake in reverse. not when i change gears. changing gears and getting it into gear is fine.

The only mount that isn't visible is the rear one. So yes it will require you to jack up the car and look from underneath to get a good view (don't forget to use jack stands, safety first!)
While your down there check the radius rod bolts like mentioned earlier, they loosened up on me before and caused a noticeable clunking/clacking sound.
Radius Rod is labeled number 6 on the illustration and the bolts you want to check are labeled as number 25

my auto did this before too if its the same clunk... then my trans died lol
