You're not really "lowering" it, you're corner balancing it. The four corners of the car all have different amounts of weight distributed on them, so lowering the springs alters how much load is on each side. If you take the front driver and rear passenger side and add it up, and compare it to the front passenger and rear driver, you will see they are different. Lowering the springs or raising them will allow you to make each cross measurement equal or close to equal, resulting in better handling.
