gas gauge problem?

hi guys
my gas thank is full but the gauge reads about 3/4 and its keeps going up and down . it goes down to half than goes up to almost full then goes back to 3/4s any idea?

Could be the float. But I don't see the float submerging itself in a full tank of gas, then coming back up to the top.

The gas gauge is controlled by an electric magnet, it receives a currant from the sensor to display how much gas you have in the tank.

Could be in your dash or a sensor.

How long has it been doing this?

thank you guys for the replys . i found out what the problem was . the ground for the fuel pump was loos and had a bad connection so i tightend it and now everything is working fine .
