i recently got a p1399 and p0304 code on my cel and the two probably causes were (a) clogged egr passage (b) valve out of range and the p0304 is a misfire on cylinder 4.

friend and i took off the intake manifold today and managed to find a crap ton of gunk and nasty ish in my manifold so i went at it with the throttle body cleaner and did work. looks brand new now. made me feel good until we put everything back together (vacuum lines, electrical plugs, and coolant lines). wouldn't you know it, same two codes still persist.

then i decided to do a leakdown test. it's in the red zone on only cylinder 4. i do have a hissing noise coming out of the exhaust. so more than likely, the exhaust valve on cylinder 4 is either burnt or bent. decided to take the head off tomorrow to send it off to the machine shop to get rebuilt and cleaned up.

now while i'm sitting here writing this, i just realized that if my valve is out of range on cylinder 4, then that may be why it's hissing..even at "top dead center" on cylinder 4, it's not actually on "top dead center" because the valve isn't closed all the way due to out of range. if anyone can verify this that has experience with this then please pm me or write on here please...a simple yes that is possible or no that is not possible will suffice. i'll probably still do the valve adjustment tomorrow just to make sure anyways but if all i see is no then i'll just go ahead and take the head off to get rebuilt completely. thanks in advance 6thgen.

I have the same two codes. And I was loosing coolant there for a bit. Anyways... The car only runs funny after I stop for a few minutes and go to start it again. I am just curious why #4 is the culprit in all these threads. I checked the valves, they were about .009" hot. Also when I let off the gas it sounds like a rattling noise coming out of cylinder four in the exhaust header. Not cool... Wtf would cause that? It litterally sounds like a loose *** bolt inside the damn header. This is pissing me off. I am going to pull the EGR valve and clean it up, ect. Then do a leakdown. Good thing I got the tcu in my cb7 backup accord. Lol

Pulled distributor cap off. The flat metal piece on the rotor is loose (the jumper from the coil to the wires) and i thought it was going to fall off. Probably need a new one of those. Might have caused a misfire? Meh... Updates tomorrow.

sorry to say but your symptoms described, are extremely similar to mine. also, valve clearance needs to be checked when the engine is stone cold, as in 6:30am "just woke up" cold. to make sure it is the exhaust valve, which i'm almost positive it is in your car, do a cylinder leak down test and listen for the passing air.

here is my status as of the past couple days. the machine shop has had my head and just got it back yesterday.

and while your head is off, if that does turn out to be the culprit, make sure you clean the iacv while it's off. because here is how mine looked after i cleaned the port a bit. no idea how i didn't have a fluctuating idle..

goodluck. let me know how it goes

no fluctuating idle? your car, sir, is a champion. i've only got a bad sparkplug (i'm hoping) in cylinder 3, gotta get the diagnostic done, but even i have a rough idle...

150psi at altitude on all four. No Air From valves on leakdown, No air in coolant, None out the valve cover, hardly any past the rings... Replaced the Rotor in the distributor (the metal was like falling off?) and it seems to be fine. No more smoking or anything. Valve Lash on all Exhaust valves was .009" and .011" on intake. Maybe it actually is my EGR, or A fuel injector!?! ugh.

Btw, Your car is a champ, I just replace motors when **** like this happens. But the likelyhood of me finding another F23a1 for $150... Slim. lol

Yea just got the car done today and all running good after head rebuild. If everything checks out for the leak down test and all the cylinders are up on compression test then a quick test to figure out if it's injector is to disconnect that cylinders injector and feel to see if the idle changes. If it doesn't change then your injector is bad and if it does change then your injector is not the problem...
