Seems legit. Think I'll make up some samples and see replicate both situations. Thanks for the input guys.

Vinyl will either
A) not stick well enough
or
B) leave areas of entrapped air, most likely along the seams of each piece of painters tape
or
C) If you have to pull up the vinyl at all while laying it down, it's probably going to mess up the artwork

Either way, they will have to spray the whole thing down with some kind of wax and grease remover to get anything to stick, thus possibly causing the sharpie to run... I don't think you will have luck either way. And also with clearcoat, you can't just spray it on top of anything, it needs fine scratches to adhere to. Like 3000 grit scratches. So yeah... I think you might be SOL, but let us know if you come up with something.

Since it's tape, I feel like clear coat would be the better option. I think it would get in the nooks and crannies that a vinyl wrap may miss (assuming there is some tape overlap thus creating some raised areas, etc). Plus I wouldn’t think the vinyl would provide gloss like the clearcoat would. Course maybe you’re wanting more of a satin finish.

Thats a good idea before you ruin your master piece. lol
I think clear vinyl might be your best bet.

Two potential problems come to mind when thinking about the clear coat option.
1. Adhesion will be an issue since the hood will need to be prepped thoroughly. (It might ruin the artwork)

2. If you mess up on the clear, you will need to wetsand and buff. I would be real nervous about sanding or buffing through the artwork.

As far as the vinyl not getting into all areas, nothing a heat gun or hairdryer can't handle. Just my thoughts. Good luck and let us know what you did finally.

i vote trying the vinyl first, clear coat sounds like a mess on that surface, just tape and draw on a test piece of something, then clear half and vinyl half

Hey Chido! I love that hood so much - amazing work. I think the best bet is covering the whole thing with some type of enamel/resin, such as that which is used for carbon fiber. This will seal the artwork in. You can build it layer by layer and it will be sealed forever! :action-smiley-042:

this may sound odd, and I know this is a little bit different situation, but when Im done with my art (on paper) is spray hair spray on it and when it dries it should set the piece so it doesnt smudge or smear in any way... I think if you did that then maybe clear over it you shouldnt have to worry about it running or smearing.... but the way ppl do auto paint, it shouldnt smear any way I wouldnt think cause the paint is sort of misted on the car.
