I'm sure you can practice welding with scrap metal and eventually you'll probably get the hang of it. Then you don't have to rely on your dad to weld it and you can just go ahead and do it yourself and continue with the build.

What do you have to weld? If you got all the supplies (tig machine, tungsten tips, and gas) you got the hardest part over and done with. Tig welding is not super hard so long as u got some direction. After that its all practice. Let me know if you need any help. I'm fairly good at Tig welding.

yeah I have been watching and reading lots of how to weld videos. I am very confident that I can do it myself with practice. I bought a 3x4 foot sheet of aluminum and a few misc tungsten to practice on. I did some mig welds on thin aluminum but kept burning through so we got the tig. thats been sitting we went to practice but all dad wanted to do was leave so that was upsetting.

I will be fabbing a 3" exhaust and 2.5" ic piping from mandrel bends. I cut the aluminum and prepped it 2 or 3 weeks ago. the steel shouldn't be a problem I might just mig that just to make to make it faster.

I now need to save up and buy an auto darkening helmet because this old black window sure sucks to be precice with.

ya its alot better with an auto darkening helmet..Theres been numerous times where i was lined up,pulled the mask down and started the weld and was no where close to where i needed to be..ha

I bought a refurbished Lincoln welder from them..Its awsome,very well all purpose welder with many settings.

when you weld aluminum you need to set the welder to AC mode. usually i go 30+ 70-. That way the positive arc cleans the aluminum of aluminum oxide. Then the negative arc actually melts the aluminum. http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/calculators/tig_amperage_calculator.php is a good link for calculating the right settings. If you don't use AC current you will burn through every time. No way to weld aluminum with DC current.

Love the fact you're doin it all yourself, and you're not affraid of getting your hands dirty.
After reading this I have been contemplating building a Forged H22 Bottom end and transplanting my head across to it. That way I could retain the use of the car until such time as it can be completed over a weekend.

Bit off topic, but you say you're land locked in Alaska.... have you ever heard of a race called the Iditarod??
Have always wanted to go to Alaska.... mainly Nome.... and watch the finish of that race.

we borrowed a HTP machine pretty shure its the 210 model the owner hasn't used it ever and does not plan to so we have time I am scared that I am going to f this up but I am going to do lots of pipe welding practice before going at it I think. Tommorow is the big test day.

iditarod started just the other day I think I have herd of ti and been to the starting line in summer had to fly there as it is in down town anchorage alaska. I have also ponderd just swapping a built h22 block with my head as well doubt I will do that but it is an idea!

Prelude H22A's are a dime a dozen here in N.Z (can pick one up for like $100 USD in running form, sometimes with a tranny attached!)

Here's a couple of pics of my mate Matt's build.... for inspiration (I can remove them if you wish)

The Intercooler has been flipped up the other way now so the inlet / outlet points are at the top, turbo feeds straight into it basically.

The manifold is being constructed to make it sit in this position - just so the downpipe clears that dreaded front mount!!

Obviously being a Torneo he doesn't have to contend with a power steering pump being in the way, but it's still food for thought on turbo placement (top mount FTW!!)
