Dealers only charge 90/hour there? Damnnn i'd love that lol. In here it's usually 110+...with most private shops being at the 70-90 range.

There's gotta be some smaller or even performance oriented shops that do smoke tests in there.

Talked to a dealer out of curiosity to see what they’d charge to test the evap system/check for leaks. When did dealers start charging $90/labor hour? That’s pretty ridiculous. Going to look into a shop that will do the same thing for less.

I felt it while I was under there, still seemed intact from when I sealed it up. I am kind of in the mindset now that if nothing else I’ve replaced was bad…the solenoid wouldn’t be either. Plus it’s inside that plastic casing. But that may be my frusteration talking.

I have 1456 though. Wish I had the 1457 lol, seems like it’s easier to fix. In fact I bet one of the three things I’ve replaced already would have solved that one. Thanks for the recommendation though.

Tire Discounters wants to charge me $90 to run the smoke machine on my car. Can anyone tell me why it would cost that?

one hr of labor. The smoke is made from mineral oil, costs almost nothing.

The Tech will get $10-20, The service writer will get $5-10. The rest goes to the company.

Don't always need a smoke machine, I don't usually use one. Figure out a way to put compressed air into the filler neck (rubber plug with a port in it). Keep the pressure down to 1-2psi (so the tank doesn't blow up). Then listen. Soapy water in a spray bottle works well (like looking for a leak in a tire, watch for bubbles) so does a mechanics stethoscope (remove the probe end thing and connect the ear hoses to a T fitting with one long hose, works great for vacuum leaks too).

Use a small battery & jumper wires to activate solenoids. Check the FSM, might have to activate the canister vent valve to build pressure. I never had to diag EVAP on an Accord, so I'm not sure.

Ended up getting a smoke test at Tire Discounters, but they didn’t have to do it for long so it was free. They said there was one hose that was not connected under the car where there was smoke, and that a small amount was coming out of the solenoid (only solenoid under there is the valve set solenoid to my understanding). The hose thing I don’t understand because I know that everything I took apart when I replaced a few parts, I put back together. So it either wasn’t seen at all when I was working under the car, or it became disconnected somehow. Thinking it was the latter I asked them if it had a clamp on it and they said it had a locking mechanism on it and that now there is no way it could become disconnected again. I don’t know, still confused about that.

So anyway those were the only two places it was leaking according to them. They cleared the CEL and it came back two days later, same p1456 code. So now I am going to change the valve set solenoid, part no. 17012-S84-A01. I hope this will be the end, it should be if it is the only other place smoke was coming out.

What a ridiculous and difficult problem this code is. I have it too and don't want to care, but sometimes I still do. Mine runs the fuel pump sometimes when the car is off.

Replaced solenoid valve set (17012-S84-A01) #7 tonight, and cleared CEL with my scan tool. We'll see if it comes back on...

...if it does... :suicide:

im on the same boat. I got one more thing to replace which is the purge solenoid and the vent pump looking device. I already replaced the charcoal canister (shoe box) and the vapor vent solenoid. Checked all the hoses including the fuel pump area in the trunk. Replaced the gas cap as well. If all fails I'm gonna take it to a mechanic for a smoke test.

^ I've did the same exact things as posted above. I've learned to ignore it, but ignoring it won't help because I have to renew my registration and get my car smogged before March.
