I had to replace mine for the corolla I had and I don"t think theres a wire shortage if so your light would turn on at all; sorry took pic upside down but its the white connector to the green and brown connect hope that made sense
It might be the brake sensor behind the pedal
If it was the brake switch non of the brake light would work, also, the shift lock solenoid wouldn't work either and you'd be stuck in park.
My guess is corroded grounds in the trunk. Remove the liner like you would to change the bulbs and it should be somewhere nearby.
Yes, the grounds. They'll be small black wires bolted to the chassis/frame/whatever is metal and they'll be one for each side.
The fuse isn't blown? If not, it's gotta be a bad ground or bulb socket.
