Can a cat actually be cleaned like this?

Wow what the f*ck.. I have no clue what to think.. If it's off the car it could be plausible, but I would NEVER run any laquer thinner through the engine :poke:.

I've seen other reputable DIY's from that guy before though, he knows his stuff, but this is out of the ordinary.

The only one I would try is the taking it off and cleaning it like that. So that would be possible? I have that same code.

I say yeah it would work, if laquer thinner dissolves carbon clogging and buildup I don't see why it wouldn't work. Laquer thinner will have no effect on the platinum matrix inside. I would also grab a compressor afterwards and flow air through the holes, and then put it in the thinner again. Keep doing that until it is completely clean.

Yeah it seems a little weird, but my cat is bad. So if it doesn't work then I really didn't loose anything, I still have to gut it if it doesn't clean it. Either gut it and do the nonfouler trick, or pay $100 for a new one. :ugh: Not much to loose here. haha
I think I'm going to try this.

Try it! The only thing you'll lose is the price of laquer thinner, air from the hose, and your mind if you can't get the cat off your car :jae:.

be careful if u try this, the laquer thinner could cause more problems than solve. it may even cause the cat to overheat and break apart (especially if its already clogged). i seriously doubt this would work. just buy a universal cat with an o2 bung in the middle. 50$ or so, and take it to your local exhaust shop.

typical cat failure is caused from people driving with a misfire and the un-burnt fuel makes its way to the cat and burns it up.

other causes for cat failure is- bad thermostat- using the wrong octane fuel- engine running to rich- and many more.

this is based on my 4 years experience working in an exhaust shop.

I have heard of running alcohol through an engine periodically to keep the cat clean, but never laquer thinner. Regaurdless, I would never put anything in my gas tank other then gas. As for the dropping it in detergent I would definatly try that. If the cat is bad anyways the worst it could do is still not work.
