So I installed some Basics on ericthecheat's sedan today and being my first time ever dealing with coilovers, I have some questions.

We installed the coilovers following the manual. We preloaded the springs to 1.25" all around (manual specs something like 0.9"F and 1.2" rear) so the springs don't rattle around when the suspension is fully unloaded. Once the car was on the ground, it appeared to not be lowered at all, maybe 1" in the rear at most.

Do you Tein guys run with the collars at the lowest threads or what? I can't see that being safe at all... Do they make helper springs for them?

Thanks fellow 6th genners!

Mine were all cranked down to the lowest threads on all four corners for five years. I even removed one spring seat from each of the front two coilovers just to go about 1/4" lower than it was with both of them in. It's perfectly safe.

When you go over a larger bump, do the springs rattle at all? I feel like when the shock recoils after a bump the spring would rattle around a bit.

No. The shocks do not rebound that fast. If you removed the spring and compressed them all the way, they would move back very slowly, and by that time you would have already had the cars full weight on the spring again. Believe me when I say that there are no noises that you will hear from the suspension and that it is 100% safe.

You would have to catch some major air before your springs would unseat from the top hat. heheheh

I thought it was odd too...sometimes when I jack up my car, I make sure the springs go back into place.

basics may be different (never seen them in person), but this contradicts my experience with SS's. If I have the spring perches too far down, I could hear the springs binding when I'd go over bumps and stuff. I ended up raising the perches back up 0.25" or so, so that the spring was fully contained, and then the noises all went away.

SS and Basics are identical in every way except for the adjustment knob on the top. Internally they are the same coilover. Don't know why you heard any noise though because like I said I had mine on for like five years and they were silent. Also, when you refer to the spring moving as spring bind, it's not technically called that. Spring bind is where the spring fully compresses and all the coils are touching, basically sitting on top of one another.

I had Basics all the way down as well.

I never heard or felt any spring rattle due to shock travel...

but that's one thing that sucks about the Teins... no spring pre-load. Their suggested "pre-load" is just a particular height setting, and its a 4x4 one at that, lol.

Just slam it, Eric will be fine.
