SS and Basics are identical in every way except for the adjustment knob on the top. Internally they are the same coilover. Don't know why you heard any noise though because like I said I had mine on for like five years and they were silent. Also, when you refer to the spring moving as spring bind, it's not technically called that. Spring bind is where the spring fully compresses and all the coils are touching, basically sitting on top of one another.

well the term I am using may be incorrect, but I'm referring to the springs popping back into position in the top hats and making a clunking noise. from doing google searches at the time that was supposedly the most likely cause, and helper springs or some rubber wrap should have helped
