A thicker oil could potentially help depending on how bad the seals or rings are. Thicker oils have a higher viscosity and surface tension so they might not leak where a thinner oil leaked.

If you go to autozone or advanced auto you would rent a compression tested. It's just a pressure gauge that you screw into the head (in place of the spark plugs).

This guy has a nice video on how to do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_tbksFYhl4

I also recommend his other videos, nice guy and nice videos.

I always use Royal Purple synthetic oil. My motor has been running great for years even with the abuse i put it through.

If you are looking for a thinker oil, go for something like 10w40. Def still do the basic engine check stuff though like compression and the things i listed before. You want to take care of the issue not cover it up :p

check n make sure all those bolts are tight on the turbo. i had one brand new came with loose bolts n was leaking similar to yours. if not. hopefully its something external and not the engine. good luck.
