Re: UPDATE!!! [3-21-11] x5carl3tmurd3rx's Turbo build

thanks lemmie.

just got in from working on the car. finished the hood exit exhaust today in class so thats bolted on with the stock o2 and my windband o2 installed in it. Wit the OBX-R intercooler kit I got off ebay and surprisingly it fits really nice. the only down side to it is that the T-bolt clamps they give you are slightly too small to fit of the couplers very well so they're a pain in the ***. I'm just going to replace them with the ratchet type you get at advance since I can't afford the time or money it would take to get some good quality t-bolt clamps.

vtec solenoid gasket and the front water cover gasket will be at honda around noon today so I can get that done then we just gotta set fuel pressure and get the car idling correctly and she's ready for break-in. which probably means me driving through the night to get enough miles on the new motor so we can tune it Wednesday or Thursday after class.

When you DO drive it for the breakin, make sure you stay in VACUUM and NOT positive (boost) pressure without a tune.

The other question is, how well will the engine break in with no load on it? I have heard of issues with rings seating improperly when there is not enough load on the engine with expectation for more load later. I may be wrong.

Speaking with people recently, I am under the impression that people do it differently with different outcomes, either good or bad depending on different factors of how the engine was built.

Some people build it, break it in with mileage and no load (like you are planning to do), then get it tuned to their desire. Others, build it, get a mild tune (at like a quarter of the car's potential [10 initial vs 20 mid vs XX max], and break it in that way; after it's broken in they retune for a higher boost. The third group of people throw it on the dyno without any breakin and tune it to max expected boost.

The point of interest is when the rings seal, and how well they seal, and how much potential for exertion is possible after which type of break in method.

For my build, I plan to build it and begin break-in while driving in vacuum. Then as soon as I am sure that my engine works solid and everything is sealed, I will tune it to 10psi and let everything break in more for a boosted setup. After that I plan to re-tune it to my desired psi, probably 20-22psi having everything already seated properly (hopefully) and block would already be used to a mild forced induction.

After build and tune, I think it also matters how hard you push your engine. Some say if you build your engine and do not push it for what it was built for, you are not only wasting potential, but you are ruining your engine due to neglect in using that potential.

we're just gonna drive around without the intercooler piping hooked up. that was I won't have to worry about the car going into boost and can but some load on the engine while its being broken in.

The other thing you could do, which i have done a couple times (especially for emissions time :p), is take the arm from the wastegate actuator off of the wastegate plate assembly. Then take some steel wire and wire the wastegate wideopen. That way the wastegate is always completely open. So long as the plate inside the turbo is big enough you shouldn't be getting over like 1-2 psi. If its not big enough you might hit more boost. That way you have everything hooked up and running as it should more or less (and you have a bit of a bov sound too :D).

Nikita has a good point. There are many schools of thought and honestly I don't think there is a wrong way of doing it in my honest opinion.

Either way you do it, it is all a matter of seating the rings, you are correct Nikita. Whether you do it during boost at break in point or not and do boost later down the road...

In my opinion when you build a motor, either way you do have to tune it correctly even for it to drive around easily, whether it be due to change in compression, fuel system, ignition, cams, head work, etc....

When we built my motor, we got it running first, and threw it on the dyno right away. Again, you have to get it running smoothly and correct either way. We did a light tune I think we upped it to 10-11psi instead of the 8ish psi that I was previously running (and we couldn't go any higher to my ignition system not cooperating).

I drove it around for a couple hundred miles or so and for the remainder of the 500 mile break in I started easing into the boost until full boost towards the end of the break in and went back for a re-tune for more boost!

I think that is the best option by far, because it needs to be tuned for boost either way to have it run properly right off the bat....

Just trying to add to the convo.

totally ****ed up my BOV flange and had to ghetto rig it to make it work. Might have a small boost leak for a while

due to time restraints I'll be running about 5 psi less boost then originally planned since I don't have the time to set up the hondata ecu for boost control so I'm just running wastegat pressure. another bad thing is we ran out of time to get the car on the dyno so it will be street tuned for now till I can find a way to get on a dyno somewhere.

not pleased at all with my current planned outcome but I have two days to get the car running and tuned otherwise I'll be tryin to find a way to tow the car back to va with me.

so incredibly frustrated :explode:

Good call Devin, ^ I'm going to do the same as you with my build. Even though I have the 7psi and 10psi tunes already, I'll still need a minor tune to get everything even to account for all the changes during the build/downtime, then the true 'loaded (putting load on engine)' break-in will begin for me.

Wish I had the money, and equipment to do stuff like this. Or at least get the engine and tranny out to clean up my engine bay, s**t is filthy. Nice build though, I be jelly.
