nah not really... i mean its always bad driving with faulty parts cuz you never know what happens but the way it is assembled, i dont think its gonna make you crash or anything. ALTHOUGH over time it will get louder... MUCH LOUDER

great, its embarassing enough already. ill prob just take it to the shop sometime next week and get them to look at it.

i failed to mention that my transmission is in the early stages of going out. my mechanic said it could possibly last another two years or so. this was like a month ago. could my gears be grinding? its an auto. i hear it having trouble shifting into d4 and reverse gives a bit of a hard shake and a oilless squeaky metal noise.

what if i dont fix it right away? does it have the potential to break? lock up and make me wreck?

Well, it's not bad for now. It has potential to cause uneven tire wear and odd handling sensations, steering wheel vibrations, noise. As far as overall safety is concerned, you're fine. Once the bearing gets enough play in it, it can cause severe tire wobble and I wouldn't be surprised if it vibrated enough to rip wheel lug stud threads out and lose a wheel. Obviously, that's fairly far down the road.

For a simple band-aid type fix you can retorque the axle nut so the wheel bearing preload is at 181 lb-ft. You would need a 36mm socket, 50-250 ft-lb 1/2"-drive torque wrench, possibly a good impact gun + air compressor or 1/2"-drive breaker bar + muscle to loosen it, long prybar. Raise the front end up, remove the wheel, jam the prybar in the lug studs and let it torque against the ground or subframe while you loosen/retorque it.

No shop will perform that service, but if you have friends with tools that would be something I would try first.

as for your tranny, if you keep fresh fluid in it every now and then, it will run fine. maybe change it soon if you havent changed it in the past 40k miles
