you just drive like a grandma basically.keep the exhaust flow/throttle to the minimal keeping the car in basically still N/A mode. Its actually easy to do,but just hard on the mind. I sit at around 25vac so i can get a good amount of speed up before it even reaches 0.

Re: Russianred's Turbo Build Thread!

One more thing to check off, and one of the last preparation steps! I got my exhaust worked on today. They flanged my exhaust, shaved the bad bung off, and welded a new one in a little higher for the EGT. They also welded in the o2 bung for future wideband, right before the flexpipe, but after the 90 degree bend. It took over 2 hours to do since I had to take off my downpipe, and one of the bolts seized. Nothing a little PB Blaster couldn't fix! I was very satisfied with Zane at Performance Muffler and his quality of work. To top it off, I was only charged $40 for all this, so it basically made my day.

The last and final thing I need to do before I get a tune, is make sure I do not have a vacuum/boost leak anywhere. I recently bought a device for $10 which looks like a piece of plumbing:

You put the end of it on the 2.5" intercooler piping and pressurize the system using the nipple and a simple bike pump with a pressure gauge. Since I will only be running 8 psi, pressurizing the system to 15psi should be more than sufficient in terms of any leaks.

sweet dude..can tell me what parts you used to make that tester? iv been needing to test mine out! and put it on what end? intake end or turbo end?

and just hook a hose to the pump and pump it to 15psi and see if it holds?

Well you gotta be creative.. all parts can be found at Ace Hardware, or the like. I think the end with the stopper and nipple in it is 3.5" or 4", and the end you put on is 2.5".

I bought it already made, but I think you need the coupler, 2 screw clamps, plastic cover for larger end.
Drill a hole in top of plastic cover, insert and secure bike tire nipple in place.tighten screw clamp. That's the basis of this product.

To perform the test:

You take your 2.5" end off your intercooler, and you test both directions - towards IM, and also towards the turbo outlet. So it works both ways from that one location where you separate the piping.

The pressure should hold for a bit, in other words it shouldn't just all leak out. But eventually, the system will depressurize on its own. What this does for you is the ability to hear, or see leaks.

Take soapy water and put some on every coupler and any place where there could potentially be a leak - just like testing location of a hole in a tire - you should hear hissing and see bubbles.

When pressurized, another thing you can do to hear leaks audibly, is take a vacuum or fuel hose, put it in/up to your ear, and place the other end at suspect leak site. The hose amplifies the sound just like a stethoscope. Luckily, I can just use a straight up stethoscope - the advantages of being a nurse haha.

This is all in theory, information I have found while researching and talking to people. If this is the way it will work in practice, I will make a DIY when I perform the test.

Re: Russianred's Turbo Build Thread!

So I did a boost leak test yesterday, and sure enough confirmed what I have feared this whole time. The only spot the leak is occurring is the back of the intake manifold where the IACV is bolted to the block. I am not sure what I'm going to do about this, but I may even have to take off the intake manifold to properly bolt it all on and put sealant around areas of contact between IACV and plate, and plate and block.

I can already envision this being a 5+ hour project for this bullsh*t!..

cheap and turbo kit dosnt go together. Most people get the XS power kit on ebay for $600.and change to name brand turbo, modify DP piping.then of course need a engine management for it.
