That smell could be your voice coil(s?) getting too hot. What's your gain/EQ set at?

Check the wiring of your subs in the box. If the speaker wires are touching eachother then the sound will cut out. You said it worked fine for a couple months then stopped working so that makes me think the power/ground wiring is correct. If they are wired in a series and you have one loose speaker wire in the box it will screw up both speakers and make them cut in and out. More then likely the amp is bridged in a series to the speakers and your pushin around 250 to each.......

I would check the wiring inside the box. You said you had a smell? Your coils are getting too hot, too much of that and your gonna need new speakers soon, Turn the gain down. The gain on your amp needs to match the pre-out voltage on your headunit for safe operation. Fine tunning of the settings and this can be raised but it takes alot of experience and knowledge to fine tune the settings. Alot of people think the gain is a volume, it is not!! Its determining the signal voltage to the amp. Too much voltage = amp clipping. After the wiring has been checked in the box and its fine, i would turn your gain down just a smidge.

Ok, i'm starting to think that the explanation is the loose wire in the sub box problem..When they cut out tonight, I popped my hood and wiggled what I think is the ground wire that you are all talking about.....Is this the right one?

Ground Wire?

No, there is a ground wire coming out of your amp which is grounded to the chassis. You may want to clean your terminals btw

Its not those wires. Thats the ground for car in general. Like the dude said before me there should be a ground going from your amp to the chassis of the car. You can check this wire to see if it might have came loose but i think your problem is inside the box. You should be able to just unscrew the speaker from the box and pull it out and visualy see the wires easily. Before you start messing with the ground and power wires i suggest you do that.

Are premade boxes pretty easy to disassemble? I have a warranty with it, so i'd be afraid that taking it apart would void the warranty.

You don't have to disassemble the box at all. You just have to unscrew the sub from the box via 8 screws
