They don't give you anything if you just bolt them on. They're used more as a tuning option for motors with seperate intake and exhaust cams.

You can still adjust them on our cars, but it doesn't have as greater affect as if it were DOHC. You can still adjust the powerband up or down by adjusting the cam timing, don't confuse this with ignition timing.

More info SOHC specific:
In general, advancing the cam timing (on a SOHC engine) lowers the speeds at which peak torque and peak power occur. Conversely, retarding the cam timing increases these speeds.

(N/A) Since we're talking about a Honda, I assume you'd like to get more power (@ a higher rpm), so retarding the cam timing by a little bit is probably the way for you to go.

(F/I) For forced induction, I would guess that the opposite is the case. My thinking is that you'd want to close the intake valve sooner, to prevent excessive blow-through.

So would a smaller cam gear bring my powerband to lower rpms? Bolt-ons have pushed it way up.

I had a Skunk2 cam gear. After use, I do not believe it does much w/ moderate mods. You decide where you want the most power either low rpm or high rpm but you chose 1 and lose the other. I set it to get low rpm to get off the line but once in high speeds it sucked. Just use stock! I don't have it anymore because it's illegal to change timing in California!
