Hey guys,
Just looking for some educated useful input. I have a J32A2 motor in my 98 AV6. Im still using the 4AT and a 2000 AV6 PCM. Im just looking to improve highway gas mileage. The original V6 got 33 mpg highway. The type S motor gets 28. Even tho its not bad mileage, i'd like to improve it if practical. I assume there are reasons why people dont drop say 2 or 3 cylinders while on the highway when the extra power is not really needed. I figured to drop them, it would be easy to mount a switch on or under the dash, cut and solder the correct selected cylinder wires from the PCM that grounds the injectors. The cylinders would still have spark but no fuel. Im sure the engine wouldnt run very smooth but what other problems would this create? What am i missing? It seems too easy. I looking for input from people that really knows these engines. Thanks

i don't think that it would be an easy task...i really don't know the answer to your question...but would think that it would be more complex than turning off 3 fuel injectors....

i dont think its as easy a you think, i'd just shell out and buy good gas, premium oil, seafoam, and make sure youre engine is running as efficiently as possible. there are more little things that you could do that would benifit you in the long run as well as now... its not like gas prices are going down anytime soon

i understand what u r saying... pretty much similiar to mercedes (or was it BMW) that shuts of several cylinders when not needed....

but here's the thing tho.... in those applications, the entire cyclinder shuts down... in ur case, u're saying that u cut off fuel, but the pistons will still move regardless because it is not designed to completely shut off... also, i am not sure how this will affect the other cyclinders.... isn't the detonation supposed to help push the pistons down, and help move the crank (which moves the other pistons in the other cylinders? )

easiest way i see is to swap out the auto tranny to a 6 spd... tht will def help improve ur gas mileage :coffee:

You must be calculating your mileage wrong dude. There is no frickin way you get mileage as good as you are already claiming you get out of that motor.

When u say the entire cylinder shuts down, i think youre confused. Shutting down means it doesnt fire, not that it doesnt move with the crankshaft like the rest. You cant mechanically disconnect the rod pushing the piston from the crankshaft. It has to move as the others. Its just dead.

Well i dont really care what u believe or dont. Ive checked it several times after a trip. Its quite simple. Stop at ur local gas station.Write down the mileage on ur odometer and reset ur trip meter so u can compare the two so to make sure they are the same. As u fill up the tank, slow the pump down when it gets close to being full. So once it clicks off, u know its full. I stop on the first click. Then i drive about 98% strickly interstate which is about 100 miles. Then i go back home and refill at the same pump as previous. Then u just devide the number of miles driven by the gallons of gas that it took to refill ur tank and that gives u ur miles per gallon that u just used. I dont take a rocket scientist to do that. :bash:

so you say that when you had the stock v6...you could get over 500 miles to a tank of gas....the 4cyls don't even get that...300-350 to a tank is about normal for the v6...and thats filling up with about 15.5 gallons....and yea thats 19-22mpg....you can prolly push 24mpg if your doing all highway...and thats if you keep below 65mph.....
