When u say the entire cylinder shuts down, i think youre confused. Shutting down means it doesnt fire, not that it doesnt move with the crankshaft like the rest. You cant mechanically disconnect the rod pushing the piston from the crankshaft. It has to move as the others. Its just dead.

tht's what i was unsure abt, esp for the BMW and mercedes.... i thought the pistons actually stop moving... if it's just fuel getting cut off, then i dun see how ur plan won't work

Like everyone's been saying, its more complicated than it looks. Basically your plan will work to improve fuel economy slightly but it will not be a fun ride, it will cause lots of noise and vibration= not good for an extended period of time and will cause much wear and discomfort.

How the big car companies do it is by using complex computer programs and other mechanical mechanisms to control the process. Not only do they shut off the fuel and spark to the cylinder, the valves are also sealed shut(the new honda engines actually use the i-vtec system to do this). Theres two reasons for closing the valves: 1. So the engine does less work to suck in fresh air (by not wasting the vacuum) and 2. So the incoming air can be used by the cylinders that are active, instead of all the cylinders including the dead ones. This actually plays a massive role in fuel economy.

Also in addition to just closing the valves, it has to be timed perfectly to help aid energy loss and vibration/noise factors. When the piston is in the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve is forced shut and captures that air in the cylinder. The intake valve then is also not allowed to open. So now you have an air cushion in the cylinder that acts like a spring. The cylinder will be moved by the crankshaft ofcourse after it is "shut off" so the air spring you have in there now will compress and then push back during the cycle so you aren't losing power pushing a dead piston, also this will balance other cylinders that have been shut off and are also using the air spring.

I hope this helps your decision.

so you say that when you had the stock v6...you could get over 500 miles to a tank of gas....the 4cyls don't even get that...300-350 to a tank is about normal for the v6...and thats filling up with about 15.5 gallons....and yea thats 19-22mpg....you can prolly push 24mpg if your doing all highway...and thats if you keep below 65mph.....
Look man, yall can contradict what i say all day long. Im not interested in trying to prove u wrong. Im not ur average *** clown. Im middle aged and was a honda tech for 6 yrs until 5 yrs ago. Theres alot that i dont know. But there is also things that i do. But i will tell u what i will do. If u come to tampa, I will bet u $500 cash in hand, We will drive for any distance u want and calculate the mileage. If i dont get at least 28 mpg with my J32A2, u win the cash. But when i do get the mileage, u pay me. I have no reason to lie about anything to any of u guys especially something as silly as mpg. So bring it, or let it go.

 5spdcoupe.

This design is FAR beyond cutting fuel and spark. Being a "Honda tech" for 6 years, you should know better.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that. :roy:

I was hoping for some intelligent feedback. There are always technical ways and back yard ways of doing many things. Even tho i figured i get some kids that just like to hear themselves talk would post useless stuff. I can see that you are a real Einstein yourself with your responce. :jerkit:
