So I'm planning on doing my 5 speed swap very soon (within a month). I ALSO already have my h23a dohc vtec head to eventually swap into the G23 ;)

I've been surfing around and can't seem to figure out which would be the most feasible ECU to get and from where...

It'd be nice to do the OBD 1 conversion for the 5 speed swap and then eventually just get the S300 add on later, plug and play for tuning.. Do I have this right?

Basically I don't want to buy a new ECU again after my 5 speed swap, I'd like to upgrade it later with I go my my new head... Any insight/ideas? I could use some guidance

You're gonna need a h22 basemap for your ecu, just connecting to a stepdown harness won't help the motor run right. IMHO, but it just a suggestion, it would be cheaper to go to a junkyard to find p06, p28, or p72 ecu and have done by a tuner, to your specification or recommand specification. Keep search more info before you commit to.the idea

G23 will require a chipped ecu or stand alone ecu. That engine is a "hybrid" there is no base map for it and it will never run right on any stock ecu. To do the swap correctly it will require getting a chipped p28 w/ hondata s300, obd2b to obd1 conversion harness, and throw a stock h22 or h23 vtec base map on it just to get it to a tuner (tow is better if possible). The tune is the most important part, it will make or break your motor.

got ya.

so in the mean time (before I put the head on) i can get a P28 with the option of adding the s300 to it later right?

Remember.. Im doing a 5 speed swap FIRST.. might tackle the head next spring.. im asking what I should get as to 'lead up' to the g23 swap later on.. so I wont have to buy a totally new/different chipped ecu.

Chipped p28 will work your engine application as long as you have the correct mapping. Now I'm no ecu genius so don't quote me on this but from my understanding you could get a p28 with hondata, throw a stock 5spd f23 map to use for your 5spd swap. Then later down the road you can have it tuned for the g23 swap. Sound about right guys?

He could put an f22/23 basemap in a chipped p28, but what's the point in doing so. Op might as well go through the process of the 5spd swap, hybrid swap, along with the ecu tuning all in one time.

Doing it all at once would be ideal but that's not what the OP is doing. My thoughts are...If he plans to tackle the 5spd swap first, he's going to need a f23 5spd ecu which will require the matching keys or a ecu reflash. It may be smarter to spend the money now on a chipped ecu rather than later and save a couple bucks. He will spend a little more now but he will save a couple bucks in the long run.
