I believe the 98-00 is one stage, 01-02 is two stage. Not sure on the details, but you can look them up for more info. There's some small differences which highly affect functionality.

This.

The steering wheel is usable on any year 98-02 but the airbag is not. If the harness with a yellow connector on the airbag has 4 wires, it is dual stage. 2 wires is single stage. "Dual Stage" means if you are going under a certain threshold speed, the airbag will deploy with a certain rate. If you are going over the threshold speed at time of impact, the airbag is "smart" and goes off faster to help lessen your injuries since your body will be flying forward faster, based on their studies. In a single stage airbag crash, if you are going slower than the average expected speed at time of impact, the airbag might be providing more force than necessary. If you are going faster than whatever the average expected speed was studied to be, then the airbag might go off relatively slowly. Obviously it's still going to go off "on time" but during a collision, milliseconds do matter. The industry standard right now is still dual stage, as mandated by national laws. Hopefully in the future we will have 3 stage, 4 stage, etc.
